bus seat belt 100x100 NHTSA may soon require safety belts in all new motor coachesThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed requiring safety belts in all new passenger buses and large school buses. The lap and shoulder belts would be mandatory on all passenger seats and the driver’s seat as well. The proposal, which would amend the federal motor vehicle safety standard on occupant protection (FMVSS No. 208), is intended to prevent the ejection of bus occupants in a or rollover.

Truck driving championship competition focuses on safety

The National Truck Driving Championships were held in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, August 7, drawing 415 professional commercial drivers from all over the United States vying for the title of 2010 National Truck Driving Grand Champion. The Championships are known throughout the industry as the “Super Bowl of Safety.” The event is designed to underscore the importance of safety in the trucking industry and to raise awareness of specific issues that can positively impact safety behind the wheel.

3 commercial trucks involved in fiery Illinois interstate pileup

A massive five-vehicle pileup occurred on a stretch of westbound Interstate 64 near the southwestern Illinois city of New Baden Friday, critically injuring one man. Reports say that the fiery, chain-reaction involved a pickup pulling a trailer, a U-Haul box truck pulling a trailer, a tractor-trailer, an SUV, and a flatbed semi truck.

Task force says sleep apnea is serious threat to truck drivers

A task force of medical professionals is calling for better screening procedures for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among drivers of commercial trucks and busses. The sleep disorder, which is characterized by frequent pauses in breathing during sleep, can cause extreme drowsiness and fatigue in waking hours and is known to be prevalent among commercial drivers.

Children’s track team narrowly escapes exploding bus

A bus full of children on their way to a track meet burst into flames on I-95 in Florida early last Friday morning, just moments after the driver of a passing truck noticed heavy smoke coming from the rear of the bus and signaled the vehicle to pull over.
